I don’t think it’s a sign of growing old. I think it’s a sign thatyou have better things to do! When I was a kid I used to be able to reel off Elvis Presley’s army number. Whatever use was that?!!

Yeah I’m the same. They towed my car away this morning for repair and about half an hour later the insurance company rang with some questions and asked for the reg number and I couldn’t remember it and couldn’t go out and look at it like I usually do. I felt a right plonker!

But I remember the phone number we had at home as children and yet my parents moved from that house and phone number more than 20 years ago.

It’s all your allowed to remember isn’t it… name rank and number?!

I can still remember pizza toppings from when I worked for Pizzaland many many years back, and my employee ref no. (54040247!), and now through excessive use I can reel of my debit card number, so I don’t need it present for internet shopping!

The more you use a number the easier it is to remember, before mobile phones I could remember everyone’s phone number… now I struggle to remember Ren’s number and I’ve been using it for 9 years!

I may not be that old, but i have noticed i always remember things that are important to me. So your service number was something important to you, so that is why you remember it so well.

btw forgot to put, I can remember my exes number ….when we had to go to the doctors or wherever and they said ” your are the wife of!! can we have the number?!…and we split up in 1992..we had to give the last three…or the whole number.

I know what you mean about service numbers sticking in the memory, even though I’ve never been in the Forces.

Way back in the late 70s I went out with a girl for just a few months, during which time she joined the WRAF. I’ve not seen her or heard from her since her first posting, but I can still reel off her service number even though it’s of no use to me at all.

That said, I can’t remember the numbers for the combination-locks on the brief-case that I’ve used almost every day for the last twelve years.

It is amazing that nearly every forces person I know can remember their service number.. no matter how along ago they left the forces.
