Yorkshire 3 peaks walk

This was a totally unplanned weekend away.

It came about after meeting this mad lady called “Jayne” who walks 100 mile challenge walks with the LDWA.

3 bedsShe asked us if we would like to join her and a few friends to walk the Yorkshire 3 peaks, of course we could not turn down such an invitation.

They were going to stay in a bunk house which luckily had no room for us 🙂 so we booked a nice B&B in Horton in Ribblesdale.

Then due to illness her friends had to call off the trip which was very disappointing for Jayne.

We invited her to join us at the B&B,sadly they were fully booked but then they agreed to put an extra bed in our room.

So on friday evening we found ourselves in Horton in Ribblesdale, with views of a very snowy looking Pen-Y-ghent, sharing a room with a strange Lady and wondering what we had let ourselves in for 🙂

Proud !

Proud to show off my 3 peaks badge

To be able to get the badge you have to walk the 3 peaks in 12 hours

We managed all 3 peaks in 10 hours 45 mins and in wintery conditions too

A totally amazing day 🙂

Where did Spring go !!

We have just returned from a long weekend away walking in the Hope Valley with The Cambridge Rambling Club

Castleton weekend

We decided late in the day to join them so could not get into the Youth Hostel, which was a shame.

We then booked somewhere in haste, with out reading the reviews…. and believe me the reviews are spot on !!  🙁 🙁

Thankfully the bad accommodation did not stop us from enjoying the weekend.

Great food and wine were to be found at the Cheshire Cheese Inn , the company was great and the walking as lovely as always 🙂

Even the snowy conditions on Sunday didn’t stop us from walking…..

and somewhere along the way we seem to have agreed to do the Yorkshire 3 peaks this Saturday so lets hope the weather improves by then !

40 miles in a weekend !

Spring is definitely on its way, the weekend has proved this by being milder and providing us with some much needed sunshine.

After having a lingering migraine all week I have felt 100% human again over the weekend so we made the most of the milder weather and went walking both days.

Ashwell

Saturday we did 25 miles, a practise ready for my 27 mile Daffodil Dawdle walk in a few weeks time, we covered the distance easily no aching legs just hot feet and sore toes, new boots are needed but new socks will have to do for now !

My toes were still a little uncomfortable this morning but not bad enough to stop us from enjoying a nice walk 15 mile walk, from Ashwell with the Cambridge Rambling Club.

Amazingly the ground was very very dry and before long I am sure we shall be in drought conditions 🙁

On Friday we are going to Castleton for 2 days walking in the Hills, which I am so looking forward too 🙂

A Marathon

NO I am not going to be running a marathon but hopefully I shall be walking 26 miles.

A girlfriend suggested we did another long distance walk together as we enjoyed the Oxfam walk Daffodil Dawdle in 2012.

After having a look around I thought we should do The Daffodil Dawdle organised by the LDWA, its starts at Kirtling Village Hall, near Newmarket and the description of the walk is… Through rolling countryside with studs, woodland, arable & pasture on Suffolk/Cambs border.

I have actually done this walk before many many years ago before I met Geoff  but I did the shorter route then 🙂

The only thing that concerns me is that the route is not marked, your given a description of the route on the day to follow and we all know how good I am at following a map !!

I am hoping that there will be a GPX file of the route which will give me a better chance of not getting lost

The walk is on March 24th and I hope to have a few 20 mile walks before then 🙂

A walk down memory lane

I really wanted to be here  or here today, but diesel is expensive its getting closer to Christmas and I will have a fuel bill to pay soon,so I decided to be sensible and stay home 🙁

The forecast was for good weather today so I planned a walk from RAF Marham, it was a route that I used to cycle/run when I lived there, interestingly not all of it is marked on open street map.

Not much has changed over the years, although I see Pentney Priory is now being restored by The English Heritage so no nice views of the Priory today !

I found a lovely sunny spot by the river Nar where I enjoyed my coffee, I then decided not to walk back by Shouldham Warren but to enjoy the River walk back to Marham fen.

Once back at RAF Marham I could not resist having a look at what was our house, I wanted to see if the Honeysuckle, that my Dad had bought for me, was still there and although all the wire fences have been replaced by new wooden ones I could see the honeysuckle was still going strong 🙂

So almost a 10 mile walk in beautiful sunshine but I really did miss some company today.

Peter Scott Walk

Yesterday I had a plan to walk the Peter Scott Walk but when I woke nice and early, only to find out it was raining, I went back to bed in disgust 🙁

I finally got out of bed 3 hours later and it seemed a little brighter and for once the saying “rain before 7 gone by 11 ” was true.

So 3 hours later than I intended I set off to walk some of the Peter Scott walk, in March 2007 this was the walk of the month in the Telegraph

Luckily for me I can do this straight from my front door 🙂

First part of the walk was from home into Kings lynn where I then caught the little ferry over to West lynn, the ferry runs every 20 mins from 7am till 6pm and costs £1.50 for a return ticket

As I set off late I was not sure I had time to walk all the way to Sutton Bridge so I decided that I would just do part of the walk.

Its a huge wide open green walk right down the wash, very peaceful, which was lovely after the hectic, hustle and bustle of work.

Not a human being was seen but there was plenty of birds and boats, an owl and what might have been a peregrine followed me for quite a while !

I will certainly be going back to complete this walk, hopefully on a nice frosty morning 🙂 and next time I will finish at the light house and catch the 505 bus back to Kings Lynn.
